Last week, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released its Hospital Compare Star Ratings illustrating the quality performance of more than 4,500 hospitals in the United States. CMS recognized Reading Hospital as being among the nation's top hospitals with a Five Star ranking. Of the 197 hospitals evaluated in Pennsylvania, only 14 received the prestigious five-star rating.

"The team at Reading Hospital is committed to providing consistent, high quality care to every patient. Our dedicated Performance Improvement Interdisciplinary teams meet regularly to develop, implement, and refine best practices that continually improve the clinical quality outcomes for all patients at Reading Hospital, as well as throughout our health system," said, Gregory Sorensen, MD, Tower Health Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. "This team approach allows for all Tower Health physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and all other care givers to offer insights into providing the highest quality care for our patients."

Reading Hospital exceeded or met national averages in categories relating to the reduction of 30-Day Readmission Rates and 30-Day Mortality Rates, Patient Safety and Adverse Events, and reductions to readmission rates.

"This achievement recognizes our unwavering commitment to providing consistent, high quality care to every patient," said William M. Jennings, Reading Hospital President and CEO. "In healthcare, quality can mean different things to different people. It can reflect a hospital's outcomes or the level of technology and treatment it offers, but it can also reflect a patient's experience. That's why it's so important that we strive for excellence in all that we do. Everyone at Reading Hospital is dedicated to our continued provision of the highest level of patient care and patient safety in the region. I'm proud to say our hard work has continued to pay off and Reading Hospital remains the highest rated hospital in the region by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services."

The Hospital Compare ratings measure common conditions treated and how hospitals performed. It also includes information on infection rates, complications, and patient experience. In addition to reviewing quality data and reports, Reading Hospital encourages individuals to use other tools available to patients when making a healthcare decision, including speaking with their primary care provider.
