Reading Hospital Support Groups

Support groups offer encouragement and advice, as well as practical tips for dealing with illness, recovery, and the challenges of everyday life. Search our events calendar for meeting time and location information.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Support group for people who feel they have a problem with alcohol.

Registration not required.

The answering service will offer times and locations of Alcoholic Anonymous meetings, or if necessary, will give the caller the name and number of a contact person they can speak with until they can attend a meeting.

Amputee Support Group

Those who have experienced an amputation, or friends and family of someone who has experienced an amputation, are encouraged to join our Amputee Support Group. Our guest speakers provide education on various topics. This group offers socialization and support for patients, former patients, and the community.

Meetings are held the third Thursday of the month at 4 p.m.

Aphasia Support Group

Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder that impairs a person's ability to speak and understand others. The Aphasia Support Group is designed to help people with aphasia, family members, and friends deal with the ongoing challenges encountered when living with aphasia.

The group sessions will include educational information, guest speakers, and opportunities for social interaction.

Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month at 3 p.m.

Brain Injury Support Group

The Brain Injury Support Group is designed to offer support to survivors of a brain injury, along with their family and friends. The support group is focused on providing education, emotional support, and opportunities for socialization and peer support.

Meetings are held the third Wednesday of the month at 4 p.m. 

There is no support group during the month of February.

Cancer Support Groups

Cancer impacts people across many different diseases. Support groups offer an outlet for patients and caregivers to connect with other people experiencing the impact of cancer, and there are many resources available virtually and in person across our network of partners caring for cancer patients.

Cardiac Care Support Group

An open forum for patients who have similar experiences, challenges, and concerns. Peers encourage one another to overcome struggles and celebrate triumphs. Anyone with cardiac disease (heart attack, heart failure, cardiomyopathy) or has had cardiac surgery may attend.

Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month from 4 to 5 p.m.

Caregiver Support Group

The Caregiver Support Group is designed for caregivers who are looking for a safe place to discuss the stresses, challenges and rewards of providing care for a loved one. There will be opportunities to connect with peers informally, as well as presentations and discussions on topics of special interest to group members.

Meetings are held every fourth Wednesday of the month from 4 to 5 p.m.

Man-to-Man Prostate Cancer Support Group

Man-To-Man Prostate Cancer Support Group is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. This is an educational and support group for men who have prostate cancer and for those interested in learning about the disease.

Participants will discuss problems, concerns, anxieties, and experiences related to prostate cancer.

Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.

Support for people who feel they have a problem with drugs.

Parkinson Support Group

Parkinson’s Disease affects all areas of life and creates motor and non-motor symptoms. Join the Parkinson’s Support Group meeting to gain a better understanding of the diagnosis, treatment of the disease and find support from others. Friends and families are also welcome to attend the meetings.

Remembrance and Reflection: Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group

Infant death is one of the most devastating experiences parents can face. Nothing can take away the pain or fill the baby's place in parents' hearts – but acknowledging that grief and sharing feelings with others who have had similar losses may help.

The Remembrance and Reflection Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group was formed to offer support to parents and other loved ones who have lost a baby at any point from conception to shortly after birth.

Parents and other loved ones are welcome at any or all of the support group sessions. Feel free to come and share or just come and listen.

Adults only, please.

Scleroderma Support Group

A support group for patients living with scleroderma.

Meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of every other month, at 7 p.m.

Sleep Apnea Support Group

Effectively treating Sleep Apnea necessitates lifestyle changes. Having a team of people who have experienced and who will help support you through these changes, is the cornerstone to successful treatment. The Sleep Apnea Support Group provides this encouragement, advice and support to individuals and their family members who are on CPAP therapy.

Spinal Cord Injury Support Group

Learning to cope with a spinal cord injury may be the biggest challenge ever faced by a person with a spinal cord injury and their loved ones. The Spinal Cord Injury support group provides the opportunity to interact with people facing similar challenges and provide education and ways to adapt.

Meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of every month from 12 to 1 p.m.

Stroke Support Group

Recovering from stroke can be a long, hard road - not only for stroke survivors but also for their family and friends. The Stroke Support Group is designed to help stroke survivors, family members, and friends learn more about life after stroke.

The group sessions will include educational information, guest speakers, and opportunities for social interaction.

Meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month at 3 p.m.

Weight Management Support Groups

Planning Committee Meeting: This group of patient volunteers meets to plan support group meetings and activities in the WMC conference room.

  • This group meets the third Thursday of most months at 6 p.m.

Second Helping Support Meeting: An informal meeting to mix and mingle with other patients without the structure of the larger meeting.

  • This group meets the third Thursday of most months at 7 p.m.

Fitness for Anyone: A group session led by Nathan Baron at the WMC at the Reading Hospital Rehabilitation at Wyomissing. Class size is limited. Registration is required. Cost is $12 per person. Contact Nathan Baron at 610-413-8594. 

  • This group meets the first and third Saturday of the month at 8:30 a.m.

A fourth group also meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month in the Reading Hospital Conference Center, Rooms 1-3, 5th Avenue Lobby entrance.

We welcome all those who have had, or are considering, surgical weight loss. Our meetings provide an opportunity to speak with other patients who have had surgery.

A support network provides education and information at each meeting. We also provide the opportunity to socialize and ask questions after each meeting. Studies have shown that those patients who regularly attend support meetings tend to do better overall.
