Medical Director, Reading Hospital Joint Replacement Program

It’s normal to get used to everyday aches and pains without realizing they are causing us to become less and less active over time – missing out on activities we used to enjoy or avoiding situations where pain could become worse. With leading-edge technology and award-winning care, our team at Reading Hospital is dedicated to helping those with joint pain reclaim their lives.

This year, Reading Hospital was among seven other hospitals in Pennsylvania to be named by Healthgrades™ as one of America’s One Hundred Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement. We are extremely proud of this award, as it is reserved for hospitals that deliver superior patient outcomes in hip and knee replacement – something we take very seriously and strive for each day.

The Joint Replacement program at Reading Hospital is unique in that we have a dedicated MRSA-free unit for our joint replacement patients. This ensures the best quality care with a greatly decreased risk of infection. Regardless of whether our patients are sent home the same day as surgery, or they are staying with us overnight, we ensure each patient leaves with a treatment plan in place that is tailored to their individual needs and lifestyle goals. This includes our personalized rehabilitation programs, so patients can expect the best possible results.

Our team understands there may be hesitancy or fear when deciding to undergo joint replacement surgery. We are here every step of the way to walk our patients through each step of the process and address their concerns so they can feel as comfortable as possible in their decision to have surgery.

After joint replacement surgery, patients often tell me they didn’t realize how much they were being held back by their joint pain and they wish they’d had surgery sooner. Reading Hospital’s highly skilled joint replacement team, state-of-the-art technology, and leading-edge pain management techniques make the procedure safer, with less pain, easier recovery, and faster recovery times.

“Dr. Longenecker answered every one of my questions and concerns about my surgery,” said Craig Knabb, a hip replacement surgery patient. “The night before my surgery, he gave me a call to offer comforting words and a prayer. The next morning, every person in the operating told me that I would be fine and that they would take good care of me. Thirty minutes after recovery, I walked out of my room, down the hall and into the therapy room using a walker – pain free!”
