Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among Pennsylvanians aged 65 and older. In 2023 alone, falls led to 2,022 deaths and 68,644 hospitalizations across the state, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

More than 56% of trauma patients at Reading Hospital are evaluated for injuries related to falls, making it the most common cause seen.

Here are some important do’s and don’ts to help you identify potential risks and take proactive steps to avoid injury and create a safe environment.

DoDon’t
Exercise regularly to build strength and improve balance.

Don't clutter walkways. Keep all paths clear of clutter, newspapers, and electrical cords.

Improve home safety by installing grab bars in the bathroom and placing non-slip mats in the bathtub and shower. Use nightlights to illuminate hallways and bathrooms.

Don't use unstable furniture for support. Avoid climbing on chairs or other furniture to reach high places.

Declutter and organize and remove or secure loose rugs. Don’t get up too fast. Sit up slowly before getting out of bed.
Store items within easy reach. Keep frequently used items at waist level to avoid stretching or straining to reach them.

Don't use step stools or ladders. Use a “reach stick” or ask for help if you can't reach something.

Wear proper footwear that fits well and has slip-resistant soles.

Don't ignore tripping hazards and fix loose floorboards or carpet immediately.
