Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award 2023 badge

Pottstown Hospital announced that it has been recognized by Healthgrades as a 2023 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipient. This distinction places Pottstown Hospital among the top 10% of all short-term acute care hospitals as evaluated by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting patients and providers.

“Pottstown Hospital’s dedication to clinical quality and patient care over the past three years, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, never wavered,” states Rich Newell, CEO of Phoenixville Hospital and Pottstown Hospital. He adds, “Patient safety remains a top priority to all staff, and I commend the hospital staff on achieving this award.”

During the 2019-2021 study period, Healthgrades found that just four patient safety indicators accounted for 74% of all patient safety events. The Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award is based on an analysis of inpatient MedPAR data that measures clinical performance across 14 patient safety indicators. To be eligible for the award, hospitals must meet certain clinical quality thresholds, have zero instances in which a foreign object was left behind during a procedure, and have data on at least seven out of eight core Patient Safety Indicators.

Healthgrades' analysis revealed that patients treated at recipient hospitals are less likely to experience the following safety events than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals:

  • In-hospital fall resulting in hip fracture (61.6% less likely)
  • Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest (52.7%)
  • Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (66.1%)
  • Catheter-related bloodstream infections (67.3%)

“Through our 2023 Patient Safety Excellence Awards, we seek to recognize hospitals that excel in providing top-quality care for their patients while preventing serious injuries during hospital stays,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, and head of Data Science, Healthgrades. “We are proud to name Pottstown Hospital as a 2023 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient and look forward to their continued efforts to make patient safety a top priority.”
