Reading Hospital to Kick Off 150th Anniversary with Painting Unveiling on January 24

Reading Hospital is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and Reading Hospital Foundation is hosting the inaugural event - a reception where an original oil painting, commissioned for the anniversary, will be unveiled. The special event will take place on Wednesday, January 24, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., at the Reading Public Museum, 500 Museum Road, Reading. The unveiling will occur at 5:45 p.m.

Media is invited to the private event. The 150 expected guests will include local dignitaries and political leaders, business leaders, local college presidents, and Reading Hospital and Reading Hospital Foundation leaders and supporters.

Clint Matthews, President and CEO of Reading Hospital and Tower Health, and Brent J. Wagner, MD, Chairman, Tower Health Board of Directors, will make remarks at the event.

The painting, an aerial view of the Reading Hospital campus, commemorates the hospital's history and growth. It was created by local artist Michele Byrne. Prints will be available for purchase, with proceeds of the sales benefiting Reading Hospital Foundation's grant program. The artist will be on hand at the event to sign prints.

Reading Hospital has been renowned for its leading-edge care and unyielding compassion throughout its 150 years of service. The Reading Dispensary, the precursor to Reading Hospital, opened on January 27, 1868, in a small, rented space in downtown Reading. After outgrowing that space, The Reading Hospital opened at Front and Spring Streets on June 3, 1886. Forty years later, the hospital moved to its current location in West Reading.

Today, Reading Hospital annually treats more than 133,000 people in the emergency room; delivers 3,600 babies; performs 20,000 surgeries; and receives national recognition for its quality outcomes and clinical expertise. The hospital is part of Tower Health, which was created in 2017 when the former Reading Health System acquired five acute-care hospitals. Reading Hospital Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the mission of Reading Hospital.
