Reading Hospital Rates High with American Heart Association

Reading Hospital received Get With The Guidelines® awards from the American Heart Association (AHA) for applying the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines that improve patient outcomes for the following conditions: heart failure, stroke, STEMI (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction) and NSTEMI (Non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction).  The results, published in the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals issue, demonstrate the hospital's unfaltering commitment for continuous quality improvement resulting in increased survival rates for cardiovascular patients.

Reading Hospital was also named to the Target: Heart Failure and Target: Stroke Honor Rolls.  To be named to the Target: Stroke Honor Roll, a hospital must reduce the time between a patient's arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot buster tissue plasminogen activator (tpa). If given intravenously in the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms, tpa has been shown to significantly reduce the effects of stroke and lessen the chance of permanent disability.

To be named to the Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll, a hospital must meet special quality measures that improve medication adherence, provide early follow-up care and coordination, and enhance patient education to reduce the risk of patients with heart failure ending up back in the hospital and improving their quality of life.
