Bethel, PA resident Cindy Blatt, 66, lived with knee pain for years, and made small adjustments to her daily routine as the discomfort gradually worsened. Eventually, even climbing the stairs in her home became difficult. She knew it was time to consider a more lasting solution. The staff at Reading Hospital told her she could have a total knee replacement surgery and go home the same day.
Traditional joint replacement usually requires at least one overnight stay. Same-day joint replacement surgery, however, is a minimally invasive procedure that allows carefully selected patients to begin recovery at home within hours. Research shows this approach can be safe and effective when performed using established protocols.
"This procedure is extremely safe," said Stephen Longenecker, MD, Medical Director of the Joint Replacement Program at Reading Hospital. "Our team works together to create the best plan for each eligible patient to get them on the road to recovery."
Eligibility for Same-Day Knee Replacement Surgery
In most cases, ideal candidates meet the following criteria:
- Under the age of 75
- Non-smoker
- BMI under 40
- Few, if any, comorbidities (high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.)
- Strong support system at home with someone available to assist 24/7
- Able to get around with little or no support of a walking aid such as a cane or walker
- Undergoing single joint replacement (not bilateral)
Care Every Step of the Way
Patients who go home the same day after a joint replacement often experience a faster and more comfortable recovery. Being in their own environment can help them relax, sleep better, and begin moving sooner. Shorter hospital stays may also reduce the risk of infections and other complications that can occur during a longer hospital stay.
Recovering at home allows patients to rest in familiar surroundings, enjoy their favorite meals, and progress at their own pace. They continue to receive personalized care through follow-up calls, outpatient therapy, and support from home health nurses or aides when needed, ensuring they get the guidance and assistance required for a safe recovery.
“Going home the same day does not mean care stops,” said Keri McGowan DNP, CRNP, AGNP-C, Reading Hospital Joint Replacement Program Coordinator. “The care team remains involved, checking in with patients, monitoring pain levels, ensuring they attend physical therapy, and answering any questions. They provide ongoing support throughout recovery, helping patients safely return to their normal activities.”
Back On Her Feet
Cindy had her surgery on a Wednesday and was attending outpatient physical therapy on Friday that same week. Dr. Longenecker called both the day before and after, and nurses checked in regularly to make sure Cindy had the support she needed. Her medications were delivered directly to her before she left the hospital from Reading Hospital Pharmacy, so she didn’t even have to make an extra trip to pick them up.
"I felt cared for the whole way and knew what to expect at every step," she said.
Within 12 weeks, Cindy had no pain and was back to her favorite activities, including biking, hiking, pickleball, and even playing golf. But what matters most to her is being able to get down on the floor and play with her nine grandchildren, who now call her their "robotic nanny."
"I’m back at it,” she said.
