As an emergency medicine physician for more than 25 years, I have spent much of my career at the bedside during life-threatening moments.

In those times, I have seen something remarkable time and again: teams of caregivers working with precision, urgency, and compassion to save lives. That incredible work happens every day inside Pottstown Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED).

Patients from across our region come through our doors 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Some arrive with stroke symptoms or chest pain. Others come in after a fall, a car accident, or a sudden illness. Sometimes it’s a worried parent bringing in a child after a playground injury. Patients turn to us in moments that cannot wait.

No one plans a visit to the emergency room, but when our neighbors come here, they are treated by doctors, nurses, and staff members who live and work in this same community. We care for patients and their families, providing comfort, reassurance, and answers.

Nothing is more meaningful to our team than hearing someone say, “Pottstown Hospital’s Emergency Department saved my life.” It’s a reminder of why we do this work, and it demonstrates the lifesaving care our team provides. It also reflects the dedication and preparation of our caregivers who train every day for someone else’s worst day.

That commitment to quality care continues to be recognized. Earlier this year, Healthgrades again awarded Pottstown Hospital five-star ratings in several categories, including treatment of heart attacks, treatment of sepsis, and outpatient total knee replacement. These recognitions, along with our numerous certifications and accreditations, highlight rigorous national standards and strong patient outcomes. Just as meaningful, readers of the Pottstown Mercury have also recognized Pottstown Hospital as Best Hospital — a true testament to the trust our community places in us.

Our ED is led by Neil Gulati, MD, Chair of Emergency Medicine, and Ana M Davitt, MD, Chief Medical Officer and an emergency medicine physician. Together with a skilled team, they provide comprehensive emergency care for patients of all ages. With advanced imaging, on-site laboratories, and rapid cardiac and stroke response protocols, our teams can quickly diagnose and begin treatment without delay.

Most of the care our patients need is delivered right here, close to home, where families and support systems are nearby. When specialized care is required, we coordinate seamlessly with Tower Health specialists, the TowerDIRECT critical care transport team, and our partner hospitals in Phoenixville and Reading, to ensure patients receive the care they need as quickly as possible.

Healthcare continues to evolve, and we are investing in the future of care in Pottstown. Physician recruitment is underway in specialties such as orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, and breast surgery. Infrastructure improvements are also happening across our campus, including visible construction at our main entrances through early spring.

These investments are all focused on the same goal of continuing to provide prompt, high-quality, lifesaving care for generations to come.

One thing I often tell people is not to hesitate to come to the ED if something feels wrong. Many patients delay seeking emergency care because they are unsure whether their symptoms are serious enough. If you or someone you know is experiencing chest pain, stroke symptoms, difficulty breathing, severe pain, or a sudden change in health, call 9-1-1 or come directly to Pottstown Hospital.

Our ED and Advanced Progressive Care Unit are staffed around the clock with highly trained teams and advanced technology. When an emergency happens and every second counts, you can depend on one thing: Pottstown Hospital will be here, ready to care for you and your loved ones.
