Reading Hospital - Tower Health today announced that it has achieved the Healthgrades 2020 America's 100 Best Hospitals Award™ for the fourth consecutive year. The distinction places Reading Hospital in the top 2 percent of nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for its consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians, and health systems.

"To receive Healthgrades 'America's 100 Best Hospitals' Award four years in a row demonstrates the constant high-quality care our team provides to patients at Reading Hospital," said William M. Jennings, Reading Hospital President and CEO. "I'm proud to be part of a committed team that remains focused on improving clinical care while fulfilling the Hospital's promise of advancing health and transforming lives."

According to Healthgrades® from 2016 through 2018, patients treated in a Best Hospitals Award winning hospital had, on average, a 25.2 percent lower risk of dying compared to non-Award winning hospitals across 19 rated conditions and procedures. Conversely, if all hospitals performed similarly to those achieving the Healthgrades America's 100 Best Hospitals Award, 170,783 lives could potentially have been saved. According to Healthgrades, patients treated for Community Acquired Pneumonia in hospitals achieving the award have, on average, a 36.4 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.

"The hospitals that receive the Healthgrades America's 100 Best Hospital Award pledge to provide the best clinical outcomes for their patients," said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. "Hospital quality varies significantly between different organizations, and we commend the recipients of this award as they set the bar for top-of-the-line care."

"Reading Hospital uses a team approach to patient care that allows our physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and caregivers to work together to provide insight into patient care," said Gregory Sorensen, MD, Tower Health Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. "We have 'Performance Improvement Interdisciplinary' teams that continue to refine clinical practices so we can continue to improve upon clinical quality outcomes for the benefit of our patients."

Reading Hospital received several other accolades from Healthgrades, including recognition within different specialties. Notably, it has been named among the Top 5% in the Nation for Treatment of Stroke 14 Years in a Row. Healthgrades also recognized Reading Hospital with awards for care excellence in Cardiac Care, Neurosciences, Pulmonary Care, Gastrointestinal Care, and Critical Care.

Recipients of the America's 100 Best Hospitals Award are recognized for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2020 study period (2016 through 2018), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures - as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
