Reading Hospital – Tower Health has been named one of the top 50 best teaching hospitals in the United States, according to a ranking released by Washington Monthly Magazine and the Lown Institute.

Reading Hospital ranked as number 46 on the list. Washington Monthly Magazine and the Lown Institute reviewed 3,359 hospitals and based scores on performance in three categories: patient outcomes, civic leadership, and value of care. Patient outcomes focused on clinical outcomes, patient safety, and patient satisfaction. Civic leadership involves community benefit, inclusivity, and pay equity. Value of care is based on an examination of rates of overuse for specific medical procedures.

“At Reading Hospital, we pride ourselves on our high standing as a teaching institution,” says William M. Jennings, President and CEO of Reading Hospital. “We offer outstanding academic and clinical experiences focused on patient outcomes and providing the greatest level of care.”

Reading Hospital offers twenty residency and fellowship programs approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Osteopathic Association, as well as other graduate and undergraduate training. The nine ACGME-accredited residency programs are anesthesiology, emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, surgery, and transitional year. Reading Hospital has eleven fellowships available for residents to pursue after graduation including programs for addiction medicine, bariatric surgery, cardiovascular disease, endocrinology and diabetes/metabolism, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology, pulmonary/critical care, sleep medicine, and surgical/critical care.

“Medical education is an integral part of our mission. Our fully staffed Academic Affairs Department dedicates itself to graduate medical education and training the physicians of tomorrow,” says Mark Martens, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Academic Officer for Tower Health. "This includes medical residencies, continuing medical education, medical students, research, and an on-site medical library.”

The Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences offers six accredited programs to equip graduates with valuable practice experience through on-site and community-based clinical opportunities: Nursing (RN), Medical Imaging, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Surgical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, and a Paramedic Program.
