Flu and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses that are caused by different viruses. The signs and symptoms of flu and COVID-19 can be similar, but COVID-19 can also cause non-flu-like symptoms, including loss of taste or smell.
Individuals showing symptoms of seasonal flu or COVID-19 should contact their primary care physician (PCP) or advance practice provider (APP) to determine appropriate next steps for further evaluation.
Flu Shots and Flu Prevention
This year, community members are encouraged to schedule an appointment for a flu shot with their PCP or APP. The flu vaccine is available at Tower Health Medical Group practices by appointment.
You can also visit any Tower Health Urgent Care location to receive the annual vaccine. The cost is $35 or may be billed to Capital Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicare, and most insurance companies. No appointment is needed.
To help prevent the spread of flu, Tower Health recommends:
- Frequent hand hygiene with soap and water or alcohol hand sanitizer
- Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
- Wearing a face mask
- Practicing respiratory hygiene by covering your sneeze or cough when not face masked
- Disinfecting high-touch common areas frequently (phones, computers, tablets)
- Social distancing
