Caring for Our Community Since 1875
St. Christopher's was founded in 1875 as a charitable ambulatory clinic serving a working-class Philadelphia neighborhood during a time of acute infectious disease and high infant mortality. From day one, patients who could not afford care were not charged. Community outreach was central to our mission, including volunteer home visits for nutrition and hygiene support.
Though medicine has advanced, our commitment to health equity and access to equitable pediatric care has not. Since our founding, we have grown to offer nationally recognized programs and pediatric specialists who provide exceptional care in a nurturing, patient and family-centered environment, and a network of convenient satellite offices.
Today, St. Christopher's offers nationally recognized children's healthcare programs and pediatric specialists who deliver exceptional care in a patient- and family-centered environment, supported by a network of convenient satellite offices across greater Philadelphia.
Expanding Access to Specialized Pediatric Care in Philadelphia
St. Christopher's Hospital for Children is an irreplaceable center of highly specialized pediatric care and a beacon of hope for some of the most vulnerable children in the Philadelphia region. Our mission is to eliminate barriers to equitable healthcare and address the root causes of child health disparities through partnership with community organizations. Maintaining an essential resource like St. Christopher’s requires a community-wide commitment. Gifts made in support of St. Christopher’s will help transform healthcare for our patients and the region.

Who We Are
Putting Kids and Families First Since 1875
For more than 100 years, our hospital has served children, families, and communities in Greater Philadelphia and surrounding communities.
Caring for children is our passion. Here, we develop, offer, and refine nationally recognized programs through patient- and family-centered, collaborative, and innovative care.
Our History
Open doors. Open hearts.
St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children opened its doors on November 30, 1875. At the time, we were a charitable ambulatory pediatric clinic, which meant children and families from the community could walk in to receive care. Our hospital took up one small room on the second floor of 552 Dauphin Street in Philadelphia.
