The Reading Hospital Gastroenterology Fellowship Program provides training for fellows in the clinical practice of gastroenterology. Our combination of clinical training and research produces high quality gastroenterologists for the future. We utilize multiple educational tools and a diverse curriculum. All fellows aim to achieve a level of excellence in the areas of patient care, medical knowledge, communication skills and practice-based learning. Fellows will be trained to develop and master the skills of gastroenterology and hepatic consultation, endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of gastric and hepatic diseases and continuity of care.
Gastroenterology Training Overview
Gastroenterology fellows will receive 36 months of training that includes both inpatient and outpatient education at Reading Hospital. Fellows will also have protected time devoted to research. The gastroenterology fellow will be involved at every level of patient care – usually as first contact. Patient care is provided in cooperation between the gastroenterology fellow and the faculty physician. As each fellow advances in his or her training, they will take on more leadership roles. Fellows will get extensive training in standard endoscopy procedures. They will also have exposure to advanced endoscopic procedures. In addition to gastroenterology education, fellows will get extensive education in both transplant and non-transplant hepatology at Reading Hospital. Fellows will also have the opportunity for transplant hepatology training at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia as an elective.
Reading Hospital offers a distinctive training environment for gastroenterology fellows. Reading Hospital and its peripheral sites serve an urban, suburban, rural, and diverse patient population. Fellows will have the opportunity to see a wide range of acute and chronic gastric and hepatic diseases, usually providing initial and subsequent management. Continuity of care is a cornerstone of gastroenterology training. Fellows are taught by faculty members established in very successful private practices, who serve as role models/mentors for the fellows.
