The Reading Hospital Gastroenterology Fellowship Program will provide training for its fellows for a career in the clinical practice of gastroenterology. This will be through a combination of clinical training and research to produce high quality gastroenterologists for the future. We will utilize multiple educational tools and a diverse curriculum. All fellows will achieve a level of excellence in the area of patient care, medical knowledge, communication skills and practice-based learning. All fellows will get training to develop and master the skills of gastroenterology and hepatic consultation, endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of gastric and hepatic diseases and continuity of care.

36 months of training

This will include both inpatient and outpatient education at the Reading Hospital and inpatient care at the Pottstown Hospital. The fellow will also have protected time devoted to research. The gastroenterology fellow will be involved at every level of patient care – usually as a first contact.  At both sites, patient care will be a cooperation between the gastroenterology fellow and faculty physician. As the fellow advances in his or her training, the fellow will take on more of a leadership role. Fellows will get extensive training in standard endoscopy procedures. They will also have exposure to advanced endoscopic procedures. In addition to gastroenterology education, fellows will get extensive education in both transplant and non-transplant hepatology at the Reading Hospital. Fellows will also have the opportunity for transplant hepatology training at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia as an elective.

Reading Hospital offers a distinctive training environment for the gastroenterology fellow. The Reading Hospital and its peripheral sites serve an urban, suburban and rural diverse patient population. Fellows will have the opportunity to see a wide range of both acute and chronic gastric and hepatic diseases, usually providing the initial and subsequent management. Continuity of care will be a cornerstone of the gastroenterology training. The fellows will be taught from faculty members who are part of a very successful private practice. Faculty members will be role models/mentors to the fellows.
