Our program at Tower Health- Phoenixville Hospital General Psychiatry provides well-supervised clinical training on inpatient, outpatient, consultation-liaison, child-adolescent, emergency psychiatry and substance use disorder rotations in addition to medicine and neurology. The educational experience includes specific didactic and clinical sequences in psychopathology, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology. Residents are encouraged to participate in research programs within the department and Drexel University community.

The training program is based on the following Mission Statement and Program Aims:

The Tower Health- Phoenixville Hospital General Psychiatry Residency Training Program is committed to recruit and educate a diverse cohort of residents to provide high-quality psychiatric care that meets the needs of patients who come from a wide range of experiences including those in marginalized communities.

          Program Aims:

  1. Residents will graduate with a broad range of skills and have the ability to provide pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions for patients with a variety of psychiatric disorders, to approach patient care with cultural humility and meet the needs of the individual inclusive of socioeconomic, racial, sexual, and gender diversity.
  2. Residents will become skilled at functioning in multidisciplinary teams, will communicate effectively, and be advocates for patients beyond the bedside.
  3. Residents will have well-developed skills in psychiatric sub-specialties and collaborative care.
  4. Residents will develop practice habits that incorporate measurement-based care and quality improvement.

We believe that:

  • Psychiatry residents should
    • develop a strong foundation in the medical model and an ability to diagnose and treat a broad range of psychiatric disorders
    • appreciate the interaction between medical illness and psychiatric dysfunction
    • capably interpret research and clinical information.
  • Psychiatry residents should become competent in utilizing a range of treatment modalities and their appropriate application, including both psychotherapies (psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, supportive, group and family therapies) and somatic therapies.
  • Psychiatry residents should pursue their own professional goals whether in general psychiatry or in a specialized area. Residents with a strong interest in academic and research careers must be supported in these during training.
  • Psychiatry residents should be adept at utilizing a continuum of care and provide excellent psychiatric services in a managed care environment.
  • Psychiatry residents should be trained in an environment that fosters critical thinking, ethical behavior and leadership skills.

Graduates of our prior psychiatry residency program at Drexel have successful careers in private practice, public sector psychiatry, and in academic, leadership and research positions.
