The academic curriculum is intended to provide the resident with the knowledge necessary to become a proficient generalist in the field of Anesthesiology. At the conclusion of the program, the resident will have passed the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) Basic Examination and be prepared for the ABA Advanced and Applied Examinations as part of the Board Certification process.
The residency is a Categorical program which includes the Clinical Base Year (CBY) and the three Clinical Anesthesia Years (CA1-3).
Clinical Base Year
During the CBY, the resident will rotate through various specialty areas which impact and overlap with Anesthesiology. As part of those rotations, the resident will participate in the didactic and clinical curriculum for that specialty area. Morgan and Mikhail’s Clinical Anesthesiology will serve as the reference text to help the resident learn about the specialty through the “lens” of an Anesthesiologist. An Anesthesiologist resource will be assigned for each rotation to help with subject matter questions.
While on rotation, the CBYs are expected to attend any scheduled lectured for their areas but are encouraged to attend any of the CA 1-3 didactic sessions if they are available.
Clinical Anesthesia 1 (CA1)
The introduction to clinical anesthesia is a unique experience for residents. In order to “get up to speed” quickly, an intense orientation period is useful. Described as “BootCamp”, this 8 week clinical and academic period offers the resident the information and clinical experience to transition from direct to indirect supervision for basic anesthetic care. Attached, please find the “BootCamp” description, goals, checklist and didactic lectures.
Upon satisfactory completion of the initial introductory period, the CA1s are expected to attend the daily academic sessions (see below) if available. As well, there will be monthly specific CA1 lectures which emphasize the material for the Basic Examination. These will take place on the second Friday of the month at 7am (while the CA2/CA3s are attending Journal Club). The reference text will be Miller’s Basics of Anesthesia.
The Basic Examination is taken in July of the CA2 year.

All Clinical Anesthesia Years
Morning meetings: At 6:30-7:10 AM, the residents will meet to discuss the following topics.
|Mondays||Professionalism/Quality Improvement: This meeting will be moderated by the weekend night OR attending and the PD/APD. It will include cases/issues from over the weekend, or in the past week, and afford opportunities to discuss clinical judgment, patient safety, and quality improvement. Issues discussed in the course of these meetings may lead to larger residency program/Departmental/organizational follow up.|
|Tuesdays||Key Words Review: Eventually, we will use the feedback from the ABA ITE to divide and assign the Key Words. Until we have that data, we will assign from the M&M Flashcards. We will assign three key words weekly to the residents. The attending moderator will be the post call OB attending.|
Problem Based Learning (PBLs). The PD/APD will moderate these discussions using a Socratic method. The intention of these meetings is to educate and encourage the residents to speak in a manner.
During the second half of the year, the PBL will be performed in an oral board examination style with an assigned CA3/CA2.
|Thursdays||Textbook Review: In order to accomplish the review of required reading, this will be split into two parts. The first will be from 630a-710a and then completed at 4p-5p Thursday afternoon. All residents will be relieved from their duties on Thursday afternoon by 345p to attend.|
1st: Department Meeting: This is an entire Department meeting attended by the Attendings, Residents, CRNAs, and Anesthesia Techs intended to discuss the 5 pillars: Quality, Service, People, Education, and Finance.
2nd: Journal Club, 10 times per year (no July/August), CA1s in Basic Exam Review Series
3rd: Leadership/Wellness: Alternating months.
Leadership: Invited organizational senior leaders to discuss their career pathways and leadership thoughts.
Wellness: Invited organizational experts (HR, patient safety, patient advocates, Academic affairs) to discuss fatigue mitigation, work/life balance, stress and burnout, etc.)
4th: Departmental Educational Series/quarterly Grand Rounds
The Clinical Anesthesia 2 and 3 years largely involve subspecialty education/training and advanced education intended to help the resident transition to the attending level. As we develop as a program, it is our intention that some of these programs be directed by the senior residents with attending moderation.
