Merakey, formerly known as Northwestern Human Services, has its legacy in the mental health movement known as the Community Mental Health Act of 1963 which provided federal funding for community mental health centers. Merakey, one of the first three base service units in Philadelphia, opened its doors at 27 E. Mt Airy Ave. in 1969. Since then Merakey has grown to a multi-state, multi-service, non-profit system, and one of the largest mental health organizations in the country. In addition to its excellent community and public psychiatric services, Merakey has established a successful partnership with our Department of Psychiatry.
