The Tower Health System Primary Care Track Internal Medicine Residency Program was established in 2011.

Like the standard categorical track, this track is a 3-year Internal Medicine Residency Program and graduates are ABIM-eligible in Internal Medicine at the end of their training. Residents in the Primary Care Track are considered part of the Internal Medicine Residency Program but have a scheduled emphasis in outpatient, community-based medicine. Residents will spend more time on chronic care/ambulatory internal medicine and ambulatory subspecialty rotations. It offers a wide range of academic exposures and affords a great deal of personal flexibility, which allows residents and program leadership to work together to tailor the training experience specific to the individuals needs and interests. Our program is embedded in the Tower Health Medical Group. This allows an experience which will provide expertise in leading health care teams, performing procedures, education on coding and reimbursement. Our Primary Care Track team consists of three (3) attending physicians who work directly with you, fellow residents who have an interest in primary care, our nurse program coordinator, care navigator, social worker and office staff.

When you are on inpatient rotations there is no distinction between residents who are in the either track.

The goal of this track is to graduate physicians who are exceedingly well prepared for careers in Ambulatory Internal Medicine. Specifically, to become leaders in clinical medicine, academic medical education, community outreach and patient advocacy.

That said, some graduates of Primary Care Tracks across country do change their minds and enter subspecialty. The training you receive will certainly prepare you for any path.

Some unique features of the program include:

  • Team meetings where we focus on current outpatient topics/ quality improvement projects/ population health.
  • Community involvement with Free Clinic, community outreach and flexible scheduling for Street Medicine opportunities.
  • Preparation for transition to practice, which includes understanding documentation requirements, coding/billing for routine and special visits.
  • Rotational experiences which include Dermatology, Medical Bariatric Medicine, Musculoskeletal Medicine, Mental Health and Women's Health.
